Remains of the Samnite and Roman town of Aeclanum on the Via Appia: walls, baths, macellum and an early Christian basilica.

In Mirabella Eclano, in the hamlet of Passo, you can visit the Aeclanum Archaeological Park, a Samnite town built on a plateau between the Calore and Ufita valleys and crossed by the Via Appia. Destroyed by Sulla in 89 BC, it was reborn as a Roman municipium and under Hadrian became a colony; it was later a bishop's see, before its destruction in 663.We love walking along stretches of the walls in opus reticulatum, over a kilometre and a half long, and picking out the baths, the remains of houses and shops, and the macellum, the covered market. We suggest not missing the early Christian basilica with its Greek-cross baptismal font, fitted with steps for baptism by immersion.
