A Marian sanctuary in the Carpignano hamlet of Grottaminarda, linked to the panel of the Madonna found in a hornbeam tree.

About five kilometres from Grottaminarda, in the hamlet of Carpignano, stands the sanctuary of the Madonna di Carpignano, entrusted to the Mercedarian Fathers. It is a place of devotion very dear to the communities of the Ufita valley, who keep their most venerated Marian image here.At the heart of the devotion is a painted panel of the Madonna and Child. According to tradition, in 1150 some shepherds found it in the hollow of a large hornbeam tree ("carpino"), from which the place is said to take its name. We love the peace of the surrounding countryside: we suggest coming at a relaxed pace and enjoying the hilly landscape too.
