Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Luogosano

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 372 m

Luogosano's mother church, with its bell tower in the centre of the façade, Roman inscriptions in its walls and a high altar of 1739.

The church of Santa Maria Maggiore e San Marcellino is Luogosano's most representative monument and overlooks Piazza Giovanni XXIII. Its founding date is uncertain, but the Roman inscriptions and funerary cippi set into its pillars and walls suggest very ancient origins. The name recalls the old Lombard monastery of Santa Maria di Locosano. We are immediately struck by the unusual bell tower, which rises at the centre of the façade above the doorway. Inside, we suggest looking for the stone baptismal font of 1586, the high altar of 1739 and the mixtilinear staircase with a balustrade in Fontanarosa stone. On 7 December its bells accompany the traditional bonfires on the eve of the Immaculate Conception.
