A museum in Fontanarosa devoted to the Straw Cart, a large nativity scene and stone sculpture.
Just below the centre of Fontanarosa stands the Civic Museum of Folk Arts and Crafts, a modern building with large windows overlooking the valley. The star is the Carro, the wood-and-straw obelisk some thirty metres high that crosses the town every August: here we see a scale model, parts of past carts and the dome that holds the statue of the Madonna.On the upper floor we are enchanted by a large nativity scene of about 35 square metres, made from elm and olive stumps. The garden and rooms hold many sculptures, mostly donated by the artists, and two large mortars carved by local stonemasons. We suggest visiting in the run-up to the mid-August festival.
