Remains of a 12th-century Norman castle on a height about a kilometre from Volturara Irpina, also known as San Michele.

About a kilometre from the village of Volturara Irpina, on a height, lie the remains of Volturara Castle, also known as San Michele. It was built by the Normans in the 12th century as a defensive fortification and in later centuries was altered and enlarged several times, remaining a strategic point for controlling the surrounding territory. The complex spread over several levels, with a stone main façade and defensive towers overlooking the countryside; a large stone arch led into an inner courtyard with towers at the corners. Today only ruins remain. We suggest also looking for the remains of the sanctuary of San Michele nearby, which complete the visit.
