A villa in Benevento's Pacevecchia district, commissioned by Archbishop Orsini, the future Benedict XIII, and surrounded by woodland.

In Benevento's Pacevecchia district, the Villa dei Papi stands on the ruins of the convent of Santa Maria della Pace, which collapsed in the 1688 earthquake. Work began in 1696 at the behest of Archbishop Vincenzo Maria Orsini, later Pope Benedict XIII, who used it as a residence during his stays in the city. Today it has Neo-Gothic forms. After several changes of ownership and a long period of neglect, in 2001 the villa was bought by the municipality and the province, which restored it and revived the surrounding woodland. Today it hosts conferences and a public satellite environmental monitoring centre, with a large dish protected by a spherical cover in the gardens. We love this meeting of papal memory and technology.
