Benevento's 19th-century theatre, designed by Pasquale Francesconi, restored and returned to its original purpose.

Built between 1855 and 1862 to a design by the Neapolitan Pasquale Francesconi, the Teatro Comunale Vittorio Emanuele is Benevento's great historic stage. The architecture echoes some motifs of Giuseppe Piermarini, with well-balanced masses and decoration covering both the pillared portico of the façade and the auditorium. Here the famous actor Ermete Novelli achieved his last great success. In the 20th century the theatre was used for years as the municipal cinema, before the late-century restoration that gave it back its original vocation. We love seeing it alive again: we suggest checking the programme and treating yourself to an evening at the theatre during your stay in the city.
