The ruin of a Lombard castle at the foot of Monte Pergola, overlooking Solofra and the Solofrana valley.

On a hill at the foot of Monte Pergola, the remains of Solofra Castle dominate the town and the lower Solofrana valley. The fortress was founded in the Lombard period to watch over the border between the principalities of Salerno and Benevento, divided in 849. Normans, Swabians and Angevins transformed it, giving it a quadrangular plan, corner towers, a large keep and an outer ring known as the ravelin.Passing between the Filangieri, Zurolo and Orsini, the castle was used as a prison and partly dismantled in 1565 to build Palazzo Orsini. Rooms with Gothic cross vaults still survive. Today it is a ruin overgrown with vegetation, with sections at risk of collapse and on private land: we suggest admiring it from afar, enjoying its outline over the valley.
