A 1,567-metre peak of the Picentini Mountains between Solofra, Montoro and Calvanico, with the highest Michaelic sanctuary in Italy.

At 1,567 metres, Pizzo San Michele is one of the peaks of the Picentini Mountains, straddling the provinces of Avellino and Salerno. Its slopes cover the territories of Solofra, Montoro and Calvanico, the municipality where the summit lies, within the Monti Picentini Regional Park. Along CAI trail 115 you pass the Casone de Fazio refuge, at 1,120 metres. At the top stands a sanctuary dedicated to the Archangel Michael, described as the highest Michaelic sanctuary in Italy and a pilgrimage destination all year round; some rooms remain open as a shelter for hikers. We suggest climbing on a clear day: the view sweeps from the Gulf of Salerno to Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples, as far as the Partenio and the Matese.
