Solofra's landmark monument, with a ceiling of 42 canvases by the Guarini and the splendour of the gold-beaters' tradition.

On Solofra's main square rises the collegiate church of San Michele Arcangelo, the town's most important monument and a mirror of the prosperity linked to leather tanning and the art of the gold-beaters. It was the community that wanted it, from 1522 onwards, in place of a small medieval church; the bell tower dates from 1566. In 1721 a major Baroque remodelling transformed the interior with marble and stucco. The plan is a Latin cross with three naves, a Baroque façade and a Romanesque bell tower. We are enchanted by the ceiling: twenty-one canvases by Giovan Tommaso Guarini on the angelology of the Old Testament in the nave and twenty-one by his son Francesco Guarini on the New Testament in the transept. We also recommend the wooden organ and pulpit, later gilded by local gold-beaters, and the carved doors with Saint Michael.
