Church · Ariano Irpino (AV)

A sanctuary surrounded by greenery a few kilometres from Ariano Irpino, linked to a Marian apparition and an old mill.
About three kilometres from Ariano Irpino, in a wooded valley beside a stream, stands the sanctuary of the Madonna di Valleluogo. Tradition tells that the Virgin appeared to a deaf and mute shepherd girl, the miller's daughter, who regained her hearing and speech; the Madonna asked for a chapel to be built on the spot. Since 1957 its official title has been Salus Infirmorum. After the earthquakes between 1688 and 1732 the church was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century; the interior has Baroque decoration and holds a 15th-century statue of the Madonna and Child. We love the mill next door, restored for the 2000 Jubilee. We suggest visiting during the triduum of Pentecost, when the flow of pilgrims is at its height.
