A small 16th-century church in Ariano Irpino, with a doorway bearing the effigy of Bishop Carafa and a much-loved summer festival.
In the locality of the same name, on the outskirts of Ariano Irpino, stands the old little church of Santa Maria dei Martiri, built in the 16th century. We like to pause at the doorway, which bears the effigy of Bishop Carafa, later a cardinal: a detail that links this small building to the history of the diocese. It is one of those simple places that tell the story of the bond between the town and its countryside.The place is still held dear today: between the last Sunday of July and the first Sunday of August the traditional Santa Maria dei Martiri fair is held here.
