Church · Ariano Irpino (AV)

A church of Lombard origin in Ariano Irpino, recorded from the 10th century, with a stone doorway of 1747 and a wooden statue of the Archangel.
The church of San Michele Arcangelo has Lombard origins and is recorded as early as the 10th century: the cult of the Archangel was very dear to the Lombards. Damaged by the earthquake of 1456, it was rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1732. Its history thus follows, step by step, that of Ariano, a town repeatedly struck by earthquakes and reborn. We like to pause in front of the stone doorway, dated 1747, before going in. Inside, we suggest looking for the wooden statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, the heart of devotion in this church. It is an interesting stop for anyone wanting to discover the town's oldest roots and the long thread linking the Lombards to today's devotion.
