The cathedral of Ariano Irpino, a minor basilica and national monument, with a green sandstone façade and an 11th-century baptismal font.

Overlooking Piazza Plebiscito, the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the mother church of the diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia. Tradition has it that it stands on the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo. Earthquakes and sackings struck it several times over the centuries, and its present appearance is due to Bishop Filippo Tipaldi, who completed its rebuilding in 1736 after the earthquake of 1732.We like to pause in front of the Romanesque façade in green sandstone, marked by three doorways and three rose windows. The Latin-cross interior is divided into three naves, with figures of the apostles painted by Saverio Persico. We suggest looking out for the baptismal font of 1070, the 17th-century pulpit and the painting of the Assumption from 1745. A national monument, it has also been a minor basilica since 1984.
