Diocesan sanctuary of Albanella, founded in the 16th century in a panoramic spot over the Sele plain, holding the relics of St Sophia, patron since 1630.

The sanctuary of Santa Sofia dates from the 16th century and stands at a panoramic point overlooking the Sele plain and the Gulf of Salerno. The saint has been patron of Albanella since 1630, and the devotion of the faithful can still be felt today. To the left of the façade rises a red-brick bell tower, commissioned and funded by the townspeople and inaugurated in 1955.In 2009 the saint's relics, previously kept in the Vatican, arrived here, and in the same year the church was raised to a diocesan sanctuary. We suggest visiting in mid-May, when the town celebrates its patron, and pausing on the forecourt to enjoy the view across the plain to the sea.
