The Norman castle of Altavilla Silentina, spared by Frederick II in 1246.
The castle was built by the Normans together with the town, around 1080, near Piazza Umberto I. In 1246, when Frederick II had the town razed to the ground, the castle was spared.It was restored in the 17th century by Pompeo Colonna and enlarged in the 19th. Some of the walls at its base are about four metres thick.
