A diocesan sanctuary among the olive groves outside Ariano Irpino, rebuilt after the 1962 earthquake and a pilgrimage destination in May.

Among the olive groves of the Ufita hills, about three kilometres from Ariano Irpino along an old road to Benevento, lies the sanctuary of San Liberatore. From 1451 it depended on Ariano's cathedral; in the 16th century a fountain for pilgrims was built here, and in 1670 the church was enlarged. The 1962 earthquake destroyed it, and rebuilding was completed in 1993.The new building, constructed to earthquake-resistant standards, has a low, horizontal profile from which the bell tower rises. Inside, we suggest looking for the two wooden statues of San Liberatore and Saint Elzear; the many ex-votos are gathered in adjoining rooms. It has been a diocesan sanctuary since 2006, and it is at its liveliest around 15 May, the saint's feast day.
