Sanctuary-Basilica of the Assunta

In Guardia Sanframondi the Sanctuary-Basilica of the Assunta is the town's great place of worship. The church, rebuilt in the 17th century, suffered collapses and closures due to landslides and floods of the stream below, and the 1688 earthquake destroyed it once again, before its reconstruction in its present form. In 1989 Pope John Paul II raised it to the rank of minor basilica.The Latin-cross interior has a nave and two aisles ending in chapels dedicated to the Assunta, the Blessed Sacrament and St Philip Neri. We are enchanted by the carved and gilded Baroque wooden ceiling of the nave, echoed in the transept. We recommend lingering at the high altar in polychrome marble, where the ancient statue of the Madonna, Romanesque in style with Byzantine influences, is venerated.
