Palazzo Giuseppe Ciaburro

  • Visit: about 50 min
  • 309 m

Cerreto Sannita palazzo built after the 1688 earthquake, for over a century a Carabinieri barracks, with a rusticated portal.

The palazzo was built just after the 1688 earthquake by Giuseppe Ciaburro, an abbot and member of a family active in the woollen-cloth trade, like many in Cerreto Sannita. The Ciaburro family also rebuilt the Church of San Giuseppe, which stands right opposite. From 1861 to 1991 the building housed the Carabinieri barracks and today it hosts the offices of the Titerno and Alto Tammaro Mountain Community. The exterior was altered with the addition of the second floor, but we like the cushion-rusticated portal, the work of a local master. The ground floor held stables and storerooms, and a staircase leads down to a large cellar carved into the rock. Towards the garden, we recommend noticing the walled-up loggia with Doric columns.
