San Barbato Castle in Manocalzati: a Lombard layout with the look of an Aragonese fortress, with corner towers around a courtyard.

San Barbato Castle was probably founded in the Lombard period, between the 7th and 8th centuries, linked to the cult of the Beneventan bishop Barbatus and to an inner chapel dedicated to the Archangel Michael. A parchment of 1146 kept at Montevergine records a boundary dispute between the lord of San Barbato and that of the nearby castle of Serra.Today it looks like a 15th-century Aragonese fortress: a low, square building with corner towers around a central courtyard, two round battered ones to the south and two pointed ones to the north, and a doorway at the top of a tall staircase. The 1980 earthquake seriously damaged it. We suggest taking a close look at its very distinctive towers.
