Traces of the forum of ancient Allifae, visible in Alife beneath a building on Via Anfiteatro, in the heart of the Roman town.
Alife surprisingly preserves the layout of the Roman town of Allifae, with streets that still follow the ancient routes. The decumanus maximus and the cardo cross in Piazza O. Michi, which locals call the Termine, and from here it is easy to find your way around the regular grid of the old town. Some remains of the Roman forum area are visible beneath the building that houses the post office on Via Anfiteatro. It is a discreet but significant testimony to the public heart of the ancient town. We recommend including it in a walking itinerary that takes in the walls, the archaeological museum and the cathedral.
