Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Piedimonte Matese

  • Visit: about 20 min

In Piedimonte Matese, the 18th-century Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore preserves paintings from the 15th to the 17th century and a work by Paolo de Matteis.

In the centre of Piedimonte Matese stands the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, an 18th-century building that Pope Pius XII raised to the dignity of minor basilica in 1945. It is one of the most important places of worship in the town, at the foot of the Matese massif, and holds a heritage of artworks from various periods. We recommend pausing at the panel and canvas paintings from the 15th and 17th centuries, among which the Glory of St Januarius by Paolo de Matteis, dated 1710, stands out. We also like a curiosity: the floor reproduces the town's coat of arms with a crown granted by mistake in 1870, when the town had already held the title for over a century.
