Alife's Castello delle Torri, built on Roman fortifications, reached its height in the Norman era and hosted Frederick II.

The castle of Alife, known as the Castello delle Torri (Castle of the Towers), was born in the Lombard period on top of older Roman fortifications, when the territory became a fief of the counts of Alife. It reached its height in the Norman era and welcomed illustrious guests such as Emperor Frederick II and Charles of Anjou. In 1205 it withstood a siege and around 1229 Frederick II had its structures repaired. Recent history has left deep scars: in October 1943 the retreating German troops mined its tallest tower. We recommend including it in a stroll through the centre of Alife, together with the cathedral and its Norman crypt and the Roman walls.
