A small brick bridge commissioned by Pope Pius VI south of Benevento, with an inscription of 1780 in his honour.

On the south side of Benevento, over the course of the vanished Morra canal, stands the bridge of Santa Maria della Libera, named after a nearby church that no longer exists. It was built at the end of the 18th century at the behest of Pope Pius VI, to encourage trade by linking Porta Rufina to the border between the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples. It is a modest brick bridge, but we like it for its history: halfway across is an inscription in honour of the pope, dated 1780, recalling the marquises Pacca and Pedicini, who oversaw the work, and the involvement of Cardinal Banditi. We suggest seeking it out as a small testament to papal Benevento on the border.
