17th-century palace in Santa Maria Capua Vetere beside the cathedral, formerly a curia, law court and town hall, now a university building.

Next to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Palazzo Melzi was built between 1630 and 1636 for Cardinal Camillo Melzi, Archbishop of Capua, as the seat of the archiepiscopal mensa, and was enlarged a few decades later by Giovanni Antonio Melzi. In 1734, during the War of the Polish Succession, the archbishop moved here when the Spanish troops arrived. We like its history of constant transformation: from 1806 it became the law courts, as the inscription on the façade still recalls, it also housed the town hall until 1862 and then post offices. Since 1992 it has been a university building and today it belongs to the Università della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli; in the great hall stands a large statue of Victor Emmanuel II. We suggest taking a look at it during a stroll around the square.
