Norman castle of Casaluce, among the first built by the Normans in Italy, later turned into a Celestine monastery in the 14th century.

Casaluce Castle is linked to the dawn of the Norman presence in the south: it is attributed to Count Rainulf Drengot and most probably dated to 1030, although some sources suggest 1060 and Robert Guiscard. It was a tuff quadrilateral with four corner towers and a central keep, surrounded by a moat fed by the Clanio, protecting nearby Aversa. In 1135 Roger II had its towers pulled down and turned it into a hunting residence, until in 1360 the Celestine monks converted it into a monastery, adding a cloister, chapels and a church. We recommend observing it carefully from the outside: its forms still reveal the different lives of this building, from fortress to place of prayer.
