In Ariano Irpino, Italy's first Norman county, a museum devoted to the Normans and Swabians with a large hall of polearms.

Ariano Irpino was the seat of the first Norman county on Italian soil and in 1140 hosted the famous Assizes of Roger II. The Museum of Norman Civilisation, founded in the castle and later moved to Palazzo Bevere-Gambacorta, retraces this history with a multimedia display and rooms devoted to Roger II and Frederick II. We love the large model of the Battle of Hastings. We recommend the arms room, with some 250 original polearms, a Roman pilum and a 12th-century executioner's axe. The route includes parchments, 16th-century books, engravings and a collection of Norman-Swabian coins, as well as reproductions such as Roger II's coronation mantle. The same building houses the polearms museum named after Mario Troso.
