An old 10th-century Benedictine convent for women, restored and now home to university facilities and a music auditorium.

In the centre of Benevento lies the complex of San Vittorino, a Benedictine convent for women founded around 910 by nuns who fled Alife after a Saracen raid. For a long time it depended on the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno and then directly on the Holy See, until its suppression in 1806. Its scriptorium produced 24 codices in Beneventan script. The complex is highly layered: the oldest rooms, with arches in tuff and Roman bricks, date from the Lombard era, and the southern cloister is the older of the two. Traces of a fresco survive in the refectory. After restoration completed in 2009, part of it houses university laboratories, and the 17th-century church has become an auditorium of the Conservatoire. We suggest taking the opportunity of a concert to visit it.
