Remains of the ancient Basilian abbey in the Ceraseto area, with the 1417 abbey church and a crenellated tower against Monte Bulgheria.

Against the backdrop of Monte Bulgheria, in the Ceraseto area, lie the remains of the ancient Basilian abbey, next to which a crenellated tower still rises. The main nave of the abbey church dates from 1417, when the trussed roof was replaced by cross vaults and the walls were reinforced with the buttresses that still hold it up today. In the apse there are three empty niches and, along the walls, 72 marble burial niches closed by slabs with epitaphs. According to local scholars the oldest part is the oratory, facing east, with a small chapel, the tower and some cells. We recommend walking round to the north of the church, where the ruins suggest the guest quarters and kitchen.
