Village founded in the 10th century at the foot of Monte Bulgheria by the people of Policastro fleeing the coast.

The historic centre of San Giovanni a Piro was born in the early years of the 10th century, after the destruction of Policastro in 915. Many inhabitants who escaped the ruin left the coast and sought shelter at the foot of Monte Bulgheria, protected by the rocky ridge. We like walking through its streets thinking about this story of flight and rebirth. The origin of the name is curious too: Piro is said to come from "pero", the pear tree that grew where the first village arose. We recommend exploring the village at a relaxed pace, discovering its churches and chapels, and looking up at the mountain that has protected it for centuries and dominates the landscape of the Gulf of Policastro.
