Permanent exhibition with a model and casts of finds from the Grotta della Molara, including the jaw of a Neanderthal child.

The museum hosts the permanent exhibition One Hundred Thousand Years Before Scario (Centomila anni prima di Scario), which takes us back in time to the prehistory of the coast. A large model shows how the landscape must have looked about one hundred thousand years ago, while casts of the finds tell the story of the excavations along the Costa della Masseta. We really like how it brings such a distant story close. In the Grotta della Molara the jaw of a child aged three or four who lived in Neanderthal times was found, a discovery of great importance at European level. Other finds show a constant human presence between 90,000 and 80,000 years ago, together with plants and animals very different from today's. We recommend visiting before an excursion along the coast.
