Ruins of the Castrum Olibani, a fortified village on Monte Castello set between two great rocks, valued by Frederick II.

On Monte Castello, wedged between two enormous rocks, lie the ruins of Olevano's Lombard castle, originally called Castrum Olibani. It was a true fortified village, built on Greek and Roman remains, large enough to shelter all the inhabitants of the hamlets below in times of danger, for example during Saracen raids. The turrets along the walls offered a view over the whole plain, and a garrison of about thirty soldiers, helped by the townspeople in shifts, ensured its defence. Emperor Frederick II attached great importance to this fortress and entrusted it to justiciars he trusted. We recommend climbing up here for the panorama and the atmosphere of its remains.
