An old hamlet on the Via Popilia where the Knights of St John of Jerusalem founded a commandery that later became a fortified castrum.

The historic centre of Cicciano owes much to its position along the Via Popilia, between Capua and Nola. It was here, at the end of the 13th century, that the Knights of St John of Jerusalem established a seat, which over time turned into a castrum with walls and a moat, independent even of the bishop of Nola. The settlement was made up of seven small hamlets, including Li Rosci and La Morata, seat of the castrum. From 1528 a long dispute over possession of the fief began, until the order's power faded away in the Napoleonic era. Today some inscriptions and coats of arms remain from the knights: we recommend looking for them as you stroll through the streets of the centre.
