At the northern entrance to Carinola, the remains of the 1134 Norman castle, reworked by Angevins and Aragonese, with its keep almost intact.

Carinola Castle welcomes those entering the medieval town from the north. It was built in 1134 at the behest of Count Richard, a Norman feudal lord, when the town was part of the Principality of Capua. Its position, guarding the northern approach, made it the first defensive bulwark of the settlement. In the following centuries the Angevins and Aragonese restored and rebuilt it, adding its main Catalan Gothic features. Today mainly ruins remain, dominated by the Aragonese keep, which has come down to us almost complete. We recommend observing it at the start of your visit: it helps us understand how important Carinola was as a stronghold between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
