The public square of ancient Cumae, closed by the Capitolium and surrounded by two-storey grey tuff porticoes from Sulla's time.

The Forum of Cumae, partly visible today, was a rectangular square linked to the rest of the town by not entirely regular streets, of which paving stones and routes remain. On the short western side stood the Capitolium, the temple dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. We like walking here imagining the heart of Cumae's public life. The long sides were closed by two-storey porticoes from Sulla's time in grey tuff, with half-columns set against pillars and a Doric frieze of triglyphs and metopes. A few decades later a section with Corinthian and Ionic columns was added near the temple: we recommend looking for the fragments of the frieze decorated with weapons.
