Arco Felice Vecchio

An imposing Roman arch commissioned by Domitian in the cutting through Monte Grillo to carry the Via Domitiana towards Puteoli.
The Arco Felice is a large brick structure with a tall archway topped by two tiers of arches. It was part of the eastern defences of Cumae and was built at the wish of Emperor Domitian after the gorge of Monte Grillo had been cut in two, so that the Via Domitiana could pass through and link Sinuessa to Puteoli more quickly.It is an extraordinary example of Roman road engineering: the archway is over 17 metres high and more than 6 wide, and the upper arches reach about 31 metres above the level of the ancient road, which is 4.5 metres wide. We recommend walking along the stretch of paving below and looking up: the effect is truly moving.
