An evocative tunnel carved into the tuff at Cumae, over 130 metres long, identified on its discovery in 1932 as the cave of the Cumaean Sibyl.
About five metres high and over 130 long, this tunnel carved entirely into the tuff has an unusual cross-section, the result of two phases of work: the older, perhaps from the 4th century BC, with the characteristic trapezoidal cut at the top, and a later one, probably Augustan, which lowered the floor level. We are always moved walking through it in the light filtering in from the sides. The straight corridor ends in a room with three large niches. On the west side open nine branches, some of which led to a terrace over the now silted-up harbour, while on the east there are rooms used as cisterns. Discovered in 1932, it was identified as the cave of the Cumaean Sibyl, although recent studies question this interpretation.
