Residence of the Gaetani d'Aragona in the historic centre of Piedimonte Matese, with Gothic windows, old portals and 17th-century stucco.
In the historic centre of Piedimonte Matese stands the Ducal Palace of the Gaetani d'Aragona, the feudal family that shaped the town's development. The building was rebuilt in the early 18th century but retains older traces: pointed Gothic-style windows, a 15th-century portal in the Durazzo style and one from the 17th century. In the 18th century Prince Giuseppe Antonio Gaetani d'Aragona kept a theatre here, along with fountains of running water. Inside, 17th-century stucco work and paintings remain, but today the palace is largely uninhabited and partly owned by the Province. We suggest admiring its portals and windows from the outside, imagining courtly life.
