Church of the Santissimo Salvatore in Piedimonte Matese

  • Visit: about 20 min

Baroque church in Piedimonte Matese designed by Cosimo Fanzago, begun in 1654, with a circular choir and majolica floor.

The Santissimo Salvatore is one of the Baroque jewels of Piedimonte Matese. The church was begun in 1654 to a design by Cosimo Fanzago, commissioned by the abbess of the Benedictine convent that had moved here in 1568. The interior, rich in marble and stucco, reveals a refined design despite its modest size.We love its unusual architecture: the altar set back in a circular space, the choir that wraps around it, the gilded grilles through which the nuns followed the services and the majolica floor. Above the entrance is a decorated 17th-century organ. We suggest looking up to take in the different levels of the building.
