15th-century church in Piedimonte Matese, also known as San Tommaso, with a bell tower that reuses elements of a Roman temple.

The Church of San Domenico, also known as the Church of San Tommaso, was built in 1414 on an older building, which itself stood on the remains of a Roman temple. The façade is simple and gabled, with a Gothic pointed portal, while the bell tower ends in an octagonal spire and preserves at its base metopes and triglyphs from the ancient temple.Inside, in the single nave, the 17th-century renovation left a 16th-century wooden choir and canvases and frescoes from the 17th and 18th centuries. We really like the dialogue between eras that you sense here. The former friary next door houses the Raffaele Marrocco Civic Museum, with archaeological finds from the Alife area: we recommend visiting them together.
