Ducal Castle of Bisaccia

  • Visit: about 1 h 15 min
  • 847 m

A Swabian-era fortress in the heart of Bisaccia, linked to Frederick II and Torquato Tasso, now home to the civic archaeological museum.

A few steps from Bisaccia's cathedral rises the ducal castle, founded as a Lombard stronghold at the end of the 8th century and later a Byzantine outpost. In the 13th century it was rebuilt at the behest of Frederick II, who used its underground rooms as a prison; in 1254 Manfred took refuge here. We are fascinated to think that in 1588 the poet Torquato Tasso also stayed within these walls.Having become a noble residence, from the late 16th to the early 19th century it belonged to the Pignatelli d'Egmont family. Today the complex, with its square tower, its cistern and no fewer than forty-two rooms, is owned by the municipality and hosts exhibitions and events. We suggest not missing the Civic Archaeological Museum inside, which displays finds from the area, including the grave goods of the so-called princess's tomb.
