Castle
Ducal Castle of Bisaccia
Fortezza di età sveva nel cuore di Bisaccia, legata a Federico II e a Torquato Tasso, oggi sede del museo civico archeologico.
Cathedral · Bisaccia (AV)

Cathedral rebuilt after the 1694 earthquake in the old heart of Bisaccia, with a 1515 portal and a late Baroque altar.
The cathedral stands in the oldest part of Bisaccia, in an area where buildings have been layered on top of each other since Roman times, when Romulea stood here. The 1694 earthquake destroyed the original church, which was rebuilt to a design by Pietro di Pagano and completed in 1747, reusing many elements of the old building. We recommend looking for traces of this layered history: the 1515 stone portal with the image of a holy bishop, the bas-reliefs on the façade with St Gregory and the Evangelists, the polychrome marble high altar and the carved wooden choir. We like how each piece tells of a different era.
