An Augustan tunnel about 180 metres long dug into the tuff beneath the acropolis of Cumae, linking the lower town to the harbour.

The Crypta Romana is an Augustan-age tunnel dug through the tuff for about 180 metres, crossing the acropolis hill from east to west. It linked the lower town to the harbour area and, together with the Grotta di Cocceio, made overland connections between Cumae and Portus Julius easier. We like walking through it imagining the traffic of people and goods.A series of shafts opened in the vault lets in light. On the east side opens a large rectangular vestibule with four niches for statues, with tuff walls preserved up to 14 metres high. The vault, 23 metres high, collapsed in AD 553, brought down by the Byzantines at war with the Ostrogoths in order to topple the tower above.
