A 14th-century Gothic complex on Piazza Dogana, with Roman columns in the pronaos, 15th-century frescoes and the remains of the cloister.

On Piazza Dogana, in Benevento's historic centre, stands the church and convent of San Francesco d'Assisi. Tradition has it that the saint stopped here and obtained the old Lombard church of San Costanzo; in the 14th century the friars built the present Gothic complex with two cloisters. After its suppression and use as a military district, the friars returned in 1959 and the church reopened in 1968.The church has a single nave, an apse with a cross vault and a rose window. We are struck by the reused Roman columns of the pronaos, perhaps from the temple of Isis. Inside are 15th-century frescoes, including a Trinity with the donor and a Madonna of Humility. Vaults, columns and fragments of frescoes from 1601 survive from the main cloister: we suggest spending a few minutes there.
