The ruins of Montoro's Lombard castle, mentioned in 1022, guarding the old border between Benevento and Salerno.

In the hamlet of Borgo, at about 320 metres and not far from the sanctuary of San Pantaleone, stand the ruins of Montoro's Lombard castle. A document of 1022 mentions it for the first time, but the fortress had already existed for some time: it watched over the border between the Principality of Benevento and that of Salerno.Today the remains of a corner tower and some walls enclosing the central courtyard survive, but they are enough to give an idea of its original size. We like noticing how the castle is in direct line of sight with that of nearby Mercato San Severino: we suggest climbing up to enjoy the view and imagine this ancient defence system.
