On the rocky summit of Piedimonte Matese's old village, the Church of San Giovanni, the oldest monument in the historic centre.
Perched on the highest point of the rocky spur around which Piedimonte Matese was born, the Church of San Giovanni dominates the medieval village. It is considered the smallest and oldest monument in the historic centre, built on the very spot where the first settlement took shape.We like reaching it on foot, climbing among the stone houses huddled together at the foot of the cliff. The church is recognisable by its bell tower and its Gothic portal. We recommend taking time to look around: from up here you can clearly see how the town developed over the centuries, descending from the hill towards the plain.
