Church of the Madonna dell'Olivo (Serre)

The sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Olivo (Our Lady of the Olive Tree) is one of the places of worship dearest to the people of Serre. It has medieval origins, while the architecture we see today dates from the 16th century, the period of the entrance portal. The interior, with its altars, has a fully Baroque imprint, the result of later remodelling.The real treasure is in the central niche of the high altar: a stucco image of the Madonna dell'Olivo datable to the last decade of the 13th century, considered the oldest Marian image of this kind in the Alburni and the province of Salerno. We are struck by its hieratic style, close to the Byzantine tradition: we suggest taking time to look at it closely.
