A hilltop village above the Sele, which tradition links to ancient Saginara and to the castle of Count Orso of Conza.

According to some scholars, the origins of Contursi go back to the late 4th century BC, with the settlement of Saginara, where important archaeological finds have recently come to light. This settlement is said to have been destroyed by Alaric's Goths around AD 400, and the survivors founded new villages along the Sele river. One of these grew up on top of the hill where the historic centre stands today. The name Contursi came only centuries later, when Orso, Count of Conza, built a castle here, recorded in documents as the castrum of Count Orso. We like this story of names and foundations: we recommend discovering it while strolling through the little streets.
