In Capua, the 11th-century Church of Santi Rufo e Carponio, with a Norman bell tower and apses and an altar made from a Roman sarcophagus.

The Church of Santi Rufo e Carponio dates from the first half of the 11th century and is among the oldest testimonies of medieval Capua. In the Norman period the Benedictines enriched it with the bell tower and the two apses, features that still shape its profile today and make it recognisable among the alleys of the centre. We recommend pausing at the altar, made by adapting a Roman sarcophagus: a fine example of how the town reused the memories of ancient Capua. We like including it in a stroll among the Lombard and Norman churches of the old town, to grasp the layering of a city that was once the capital of a principality.
