Capua Cathedral, a basilica dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, holds an 11th-century paschal candlestick and an Assumption by Solimena.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the mother church of Capua, a national monument and a minor basilica since 1827. Tradition dates its foundation to 856; it was rebuilt several times, renovated in the 19th century and almost destroyed by the bombing of 1943, before being reborn between 1949 and 1957. The 9th-century bell tower preserves reused Roman bas-reliefs.We recommend crossing the four-sided portico, with Roman-era columns, and entering the nave and aisles marked by twenty-four granite columns. We like discovering the 11th-century paschal candlestick, the Dying Christ by Matteo Bottiglieri, the crypt with figured capitals and the large Assumption by Francesco Solimena.
